How to get a dense and healthy green lawn?

When spring comes, we all want to have a beautiful and colorful garden and a dense green lawn.
We usually prepare the garden to create our corner of nature where we can relax and enjoy the colors of spring.
Having a well-kept garden and a green lawn certainly gives us satisfaction. So, to have a beautiful and healthy green lawn you need to follow some simple rules.
With this guide you will find out how to prepare the soil well, how to choose seed mixes, how to sow it correctly and how to fertilize it.

How to prepare the ground for the lawn?

The first thing to do is to clean up the space. Weeds, including their roots, must be eliminated.
It is then necessary to move the soil and add specific soil for lawns. For example Compo soil for turf.
This soil composed of sand and peat is able to favor the germination of the seeds and the optimal rooting of the grass.

The secret lies in the right composition of the soil:
The soil must be soft and rich in organic substance, hence the importance of choosing a specific and quality soil .
You can use a gardener's rake to spread the soil over the surface of the soil. The soil surface must be uniform.
The ground must be leveled to have a homogeneous surface, making sure to leave the right slope for the drainage of rainwater.
You can use a level level connected to stakes placed at the ends of the soil to be worked.
Now is the time to spread the seed, if you want to be sure that the spread is uniform, use a special manual seeder.
The choice of the seed is also very important and depending on the lawn you want you can find the one that's right for you: if you want a rustic lawn suitable for walking, for example, choose a seed mixture that contains a good percentage of fescue arundinacea. There are valid seed mixes on the market that guarantee better germination.

The next step is to lightly compact the soil to make the seed adhere to the soil . To facilitate the work you can use a special roller that you can also rent in our gardening department.
Now you can distribute fertilizer to promote root development.
You can finish by watering the soil by distributing the water with gentle jets so as not to move the seeds.

How to choose the type of lawn to sow?

There are many varieties of seeds for the lawn, to choose the right type of lawn, you will need to know the climatic and environmental conditions of the area to be sown and choose the right sowing period.
The best times to sow the lawn are spring and autumn. In these seasons the temperatures are mild and there are still no weeds that ruin the lawn.
Choose a specific mixture of grasses based on the characteristics of the lawn you want to obtain. There are different types: fine lawn, rustic lawn, shade lawn, sunny lawn, flower meadow, etc.

How to sow the lawn?

If you want to have a dense and homogeneous lawn, you need to distribute the seeds evenly. To facilitate the work, a manual seeder can be of great help. Manual seeders are easy to use, practical, light and space-saving. Are you wondering how it works?
It's very simple, we made a small summary:
1. Pour the seeds into the seed spreader;
2. Position yourself on the ground where you want to sow;
3. Walk slowly following a linear pattern and sprinkling the seeds.

Which fertilizer to choose?

Each lawn has its own fertilizer. After having finished sowing, the lawn should be fed immediately with a fertilizer that provides it with the basic mineral elements.
The necessary nutritional elements are basically three:
- nitrogen;
- phosphorus;
- potassium.

The consumption of these three elements can vary from season to season.
In spring and autumn , for example, the lawn will consume more nitrogen, while in summer and winter it will need more potassium.
A separate case is the fertilization during the sowing phase of the lawn, in this situation there is a need for a lot of phosphorus.
In fact, phosphorus enhances root development.

When and how to fertilize the lawn?

The right time to fertilize the lawn basically depends on the temperatures:
In spring, fertilization should be done as soon as the risk of frost has run out.
In summer, fertilization must be done at least a couple of weeks before the intense heat arrives, to allow the potassium to take effect.
Autumn fertilization can be done as early as the end of August. Obviously, it should be noted that there are not yet very high temperatures. The risk of burns is always around the corner. In this case it is better to wait for the first or second week of September.

Lawn irrigation

A green and healthy lawn is the result of an efficient irrigation system and correct wetting. The lawn would need an average of 5 liters of water per m2. This is the average referred to the water requirement, which should be increased in periods of drought or in the presence of strong wind. Instead, it should be reduced in the cooler seasons.
The amount of water should be rationed in the first phase of sowing to avoid the displacement of the seeds, they must remain stuck in the ground until germination.
Once the seed has germinated and freed itself to the ground, abundant and infrequent wetting is to be preferred. In this way, a deep water reserve will be created and the roots of our lawn will stretch to intercept the water. We will thus have a robust and healthy lawn. An important rule of thumb for avoiding turf fungal diseases is to allow our lawn to dry completely after wetting. So prefer wetting in the morning and during the day, avoiding the evening or during the night.

Early in the morning is the best time to water your lawn.
This way you avoid burning the lawn due to being too hot and you avoid the night frosts, very frequent especially here in northern Italy.
In summer, the ideal time to water the lawn is in the evening, when evaporation is low and the soil is able to retain moisture.
Finally, remember that you can always choose the sod, to have a lawn ready immediately.
